Nine Patch Niner

Another UFO hits top stage - Yeah!!

This top is made from blocks that are based on the basic nine patch block. These were challenge blocks from the first yahoo group I joined back in July of 2009. At the time I didnt have a stash, but had a small amount of fat quarters and I tried to put stuff together that I thought looked good. What did I know, right?

Each Block is 12 in finished with a 2 in finished inner border and a 4 in finished outer border. This piece unfinished is 52x52. I cant decide if I want to do one more border on it to enlarge its size to 60x60. I like how the brown finishes if off now. So, I want to think on this a little.

Table Runners and a Pin Cushion

I promised to post pictures of the table runners that I had finished this past week. Finally got those batteries I needed for the camera.

The first Table runner is one that was made from blocks I won at my local Quilt Guild meeting. This runner I made for my mom.

The next table runner was a challenge in a group I am a member but it is from 3 years ago and I cant remember which one...lol. This one I had to send so much fabric to another member and she made a top for me out of that fabric. She did machine applique for this one.

This last picture is of a pin cushion I made. I found a tutorial here that i followed to make it. I made several and used them to send to people who had birthdays this month in some of the groups I am in.

I have more that I have worked on, but that all the pics for right now. I am enjoying getting alot of my UFO's done. I also am enjoying the process of learning free motion quilting. I will post more about that next.

Speedy, Please Slow Down

Life this week has been in overdrive. I cant wait for the weekend. I want off this fast track!! I don't have any pictures to share right now, camera is dead and I need to get some batteries...Booooooooooo, I know!!

I will say this, despite the busy week I have managed to finish a table runner, put the binding on another table runner, finished another pot holder and now am currently desewing some churn dash blocks I had made back when I first started quilting. They were supposed to be 9.5 inches square, but nope mine where smaller. Gasp!!! This is before I really understand the need to have a 1/4 in seam allowance on everything.

Almost forgot about the tiny scrappy houses and the free motion quilting. Yep have been working on those too!! The feather this month are frustrating me. This is one pattern that is going to take me a good bit of time to learn. Doodling more than I think I did in that Chemistry class that I hated so much in high school.

I will post pictures and an update on how that is going when I get the batteries for the camera. What have you been up to this week? Doesn't have to be quilt related!!

Winner of Valentines Drawing

I am sorry I didnt get the drawing winner out yesterday, I had alot going on. Quite frankly I forgot....booooo, I know. I was quite moved by the wonderful stories you shared about your spouses. Everyone one of you sound as if you have a great one!!

Sooo, Who won? Ummmmmmm, let me see. I need to go to Random.org. Enter the info needed. Hit get numbers and the winner is.............. Donna. She writes....

My DH is a wonderful person. He works 50+ hours a week at a job he hates, and then comes home and cares for all my fiber animals, so that I can be 1500 miles away and taking care of my mom. For my birthday last year, when I was out of town, he went to a lqs that was closing an dbought &80.00 worth of fq bundles at .99 a bundle.

I haven't made him a quilt yet because he always 'runs hot'. I have sewn him clothes, (shirts and pj's mostly), but have embroidered his name on his work shirts.

Donna

Congratulations. I will contact you shortly to get your mailing address and get these out in the mail to you!!

Valentines Giveaway

I noticed that over night I went from 18 followers to 21 followers. Thanks so much!! I was thinking the other day that if when I got to 20 followers I would do a give away. What you think? Want to win something? What could I dig out to give away?

I went digging in my stash and I came up with these cute Safari fat Quarters. There are 5 of them. I have had these sitting in my stash ever since I started quilting. My daughters first quilt she made used these.

These and many other fat quarters were purchased for .99 when one of the two quilt shops closed down. This is how I built my stash at the beginning, thanks to specials she was having. I look at my fat quarters now and remember the fun of digging through the fabrics looking for things to use. It was hard for me because I was just learning to put fabrics together to use and learning to quilt all on my own. This was 2 months after my husband had double bypass surgery and he was off of work for 4 months. He was driving me crazy and I needed an outlet. Funny thing is I had not touched a sewing machine since I was a young child. I think I was 8 and Mom helped me make an apron...LOL. Remember that project Mom???

Sooooo in honor of a 3 year anniversary of my Husbands successful heart surgery and so many wonderful people following my blog already, I am giving this fabric away. I think it is appropriate that I choose to do this on Valentines Day!!

Leave me a comment and share with me something wonderful about your true love and any quilty things you might have made for them. I will do the drawing on Friday, February 17th!!

Thank you again everyone for making this blog thing worth it!!

Celtic Knot

I have been trying to find the different quilts I have made over the past few years so that I could take pictures of them to show here. I want a way of remembering all the hard work. Here is a Celtic Knot that took me a year to piece. Every block is 2.5 inches. I used a dark blue, light blue, two blacks, and several whites or white on whites.

This quilt is a king size. I have only one wall that I could hang this on to get a picture, but due to furniture, etc, I could not take a straight on picture. Wish this was better so you could see it better.

2012 Homestyle Robin - January Challenge

Found the 1012 Homestyle Robin on Sew Unique in the Mountains. She is doing a Round Robin that you do in your own home. You don't have to send your block out. You make all the steps as she posts one each month for 12 months. January's challenge was to make a 10.5 in block to be your center square. Below is mine.

The February challenge is to add a piece to either the right or left side of the block that measures 10" x 6" or add a 10" x 3" strip to both sides and one section needs to be paper pieced.

Going to go link up now.

Poem - Quilt of Holes

I was given the link to Scrapbook.com from a friend on Favebook with this poem. I fell in love with this poem and just had to share with all of you. I have printed it and plan on framing it and hanging it up in my sewing area. Enjoy!!

Quilt of Holes

Submitted by: twoangels
Author: Unknown
As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt
before the Lord along with all the other souls.

Before each of us laid our lives like the squares
of a quilt in many
piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our
quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.

But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the
pile, I noticed how ragged
and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each
square was labeled with a part of my life that had
been difficult, the
challenges and temptations I was faced with in
every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.

I glanced around me. Nobody else had such
squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled
with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own
life and was disheartened.

My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.

Finally the time came when each life was to be
displayed, held up to the the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each
in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been.
My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise.

My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't
had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But
there had also been trials of illness, and wealth, and false
accusations that took from me my
world, as I knew it. I had to start over many
times. I often struggled with
the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and
begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in
prayer, asking for help and
guidance in my life. I had often been held up to
ridicule, which I endured
painfully, each time offering it up to the Father
in hopes that I would not
melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of
those who unfairly judged me.

And now, I had to face the truth. My life was
what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was.
I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of
my life to the light.

An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around
at the others who stared at me with wide eyes.

Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light
flooded the many holes,
creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our
Lord stood before me, with
warmth and love in His eyes. He said, "Every time
you gave over your life
to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My
struggles.

Each point of light in your life is when you
stepped aside and let Me shine
through, until there was more of Me than there was
of you."

May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing
Christ to shine through!

Free Motion Quilting January Challenge

Here is my attempt at FMQing leaves. These were taught by Francis Moore through the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge.

This is my attempt at doing them after days of drawing, drawing, drawing.

This is the front

This is the back.

I am thinking that this actually is not too bad...lol. I didn't think I would be able to do it but after only 3 practice blocks this is what I got...I am amazed with how quick I got it to look like this...woohoo!!

This is going to be more fun than I thought it would...so now I gotta find me a small quilt that I can use this on.
