Sew Scraps Along - Scraptacular Picnic Quilt

Sooooo, I have been following the posts on Pleasant Home. I joined the Sew Scraps Along. In the first week Jodi has talked about All Things Patchwork and Postage Stamp. I liked the look of her Scraptacular Picnic Quilt and followed the tutorial at Freida's Hive. I made my center much smaller and used several boarders. I have to admit tho, I'm not sure I like the last border. I guess its OK, but I wanted to get some opinions before I go ahead and stitch-in-the-ditch this one up to completion. I think if I keep the last boarder I will bind it with the same yellow I used in the first border. So please feel free to post comments below.

I know, don't laugh, I'm not the best picture taker. Gotta find somewhere better to get good pics.

  1. Hi Genevieve. It looks to me that the last border is narrower than the 2nd border. To me it looks out of place. I know there are no rules, but if I do 3 borders, I do narrow, like you did and then wider, with the outside one being the widest. I really don't think you need that pieced one and would take it off and bind with your yellow. It makes a very nice picnic quilt. Dianne in BC

  2. Good morning. I agree with Anonymous about the 3 different sizes when adding borders. That just seems to help the eye expand out better. Now what to do about this quilt is the question. You could leave it on and finish it and call it a knock around (like I've done to a couple of mine) lol or take it off completely as suggested... or...you could cut the outer border down. Perhaps in half and add another dark border that is slightly larger than the blue border. Whatever you decide to do this looks like a fun quilt.

  3. Genevieve, You have a wonderful quilt there. That being said, how about just removing the pieced border and adding another thin yellow (same as first border) border then replacing the pieced border and binding with yellow again.... it will bring the eye out towards the edge and make it all cohesive. Other than that, I agree with Linda, a fatter border in the blue solid that is in the pieced middle would look great as a wider border if you have enough material. The last suggestion that I have, ;-) is that if none of this works for you, you can always send it to me and I will enjoy it for you ;-). BTW, you picture taking is fine, Good Luck whatever you decide. Anne

  4. Depending on what finished size you want you could let it grow up a bit more and add a solid 4-6" last outer border to frame it and bind in the same solid. I would go red or yellow if I had it.

  5. I really like that you didn't go with the norm. The blue border makes your quilt pop...and the your last border picks up all your quilt colors. A solid color on the last border would be the norm, and make it all uniform. I think it's much more personal using your creativeness, and I love the unexpected. I LIKE IT ! Dare to be different, that's what makes it special and yours! Julia in Missouri

  6. First of all, let me say that I really like what you have done here! I like that the last border that you have there has all of the fabrics from the center of the quilt - nice tie in :-) The only thing that I might have done differently is to move the outer border in, and the second border to the outside, just because I like the pop of that second border. Does that make any sense? Whether or not you decide to make any changes, it is your quilt and your expression - enjoy it!!

  7. I think the quilt and the first 2 borders are fine but it needs a nice red final border to pop out the pieced quilt
you made. You need a stronger and wider border on that
last one. Do not sew it on just lay your quilt up and then lay some red fabric down one side and if you can across the top and see what you think.

  8. Yes, definitely bind in the yellow - that will pull it all together. What you have done is different, unique, out of the norm, but the more I look at it, the more I really like it. While small-medium-large would be the norm of quilt borders, there's no absolute rule that says one must do that. Doing it would give a different look, but not necessarily a better one. A red last border would look great, but so does what you've done here. Decide what look YOU want, and go for it, full steam ahead, and no looking back!
